Efficient vs Effective

Work Life Effectiveness

Work Life Effectiveness (Photo credit: Mike “Dakinewavamon” Kline)

I often wonder why somethings fail and somethings succeed in life. It may sound like a profound and deep question but really at the most basic level, why do somethings succeed and some fail?

How about from a marketing point of view? It’s an interesting question because looking around at some of the brands out and the efforts made to market, you almost think that some just completely waste their time. Forgettable becomes an understatement and I’m forced to ask myself, has the objective been met.

Objective can be subjective depending on who you ask, some believe their little world is all that exists and on a larger scale that may be so, if you are Apple or Google! but if you are not, then interdependence, leadership, guidance, and trust become very important.

It’s also the case of “quick verses quality”, or more simply, “efficient verses effective”.

What’s the difference?

Those wanting to be efficient see it as the driver or purpose, you often hear the words streamlined or automated which are great if used correctly. But being efficient should never take the place of being effective. I could from a religious point of view explain this with ease by simply looking at how over time, very little has changed in the format of Christianity or any religion actually, why? Well because while we have had many enhancements, they do not always present themselves as effective.

Let me elaborate: a preacher could tell to you just read your bible on your iPad and that’s his sermon. But would it be effective in carrying his message to you, his tone, his zeal for the matter? What about those without iPad or those who cannot read. In an effort to be efficient, the preacher would have failed to be effective.

The secular world is just the same. So what’s the point of this? While we may think being efficient is the way to go, we have to understand that if what you are doing is not received as you intended then all your efforts on efficiency have been wasted because you were not effective.

Rather make an effort to make objectives higher than yourself, set goals just little beyond your reach so that you get out of the comfort zone and actually try. Instead of just wanting to be first in the class, try to be best in the class.

Nokia X10 and W10 concept phone come out the closet

The Nokia / Microsoft partnership have been quite for a while now, I had mentioned in a previous blog post that I expected great things and that if Nokia were to get back in the game, this would be the dare to be great moment. I am throughly pleased to see that the Nokia fan club have revealed some specs and photos about Nokia real entry into the smart phone world.

The X10 will come with Symbian, so I have no interest in this as Symbian is not good enough as a smartphone OS.

The Nokia W10 will feature some standard features such as having a Super Amoled screen with 16 million colours, full hd video recording, proximity sensor and gyro sensor.

The “not standard features” include a 4.5″ screen, TV out via HDMI, 15mp camera by Carl Zeiss optics and here’s the killer for the tech junkies out there it will feature a 2GHz Quad-Core Processor with 32GB storage and micro sd of 64GB. It has 2GB Rom and 2GB Ram graphics card.

It sounds sexy and is making my mouth water.

Heres to Nokia and Microsoft – can’t wait.

iPhone 4: In perspective

09/01/2011 Leave a comment

The last few days with the iPhone have proven to be quite interesting, while I still affirm that Steve Jobs is crazy and that his policies are stupid I have to admit that just like the previous iPhone (3Gs), this one also has that sexiness about it. The feeling of “I’m cool” because I have an iPhone.

While I may have an iPhone, the reality is that while it may be pretty, the battery life on the iPhone 4 is terrible. If you even dare leave a background application running, you are doomed…

I enjoyed playing a round of Angry Birds on my HTC Desire, I managed to get to level three which is great. Sadly all you get for the iPhone is a watered down version of game – Angry Birds Lite – which sucks.

In comparison, the game play is far better on the HTC Desire than the iPhone 4, the game is also free on Android whereas it will cost you a Dollar or around R7 in SA if you are able to locate it. I have 3 itunes accounts all of which are officially useless to buy the game from SA.

The iPhone 4 also according to Jobs is supposed to have much better screen than the competitors out there, but again if you use Angry Birds as the measure, the iPhone 4 does poorly at displaying this game. The hardware spec has been juiced up a bit as the the iPhone now comes with a 1Ghz processor (it needed that) I somehow am still not totally impressed. I am hoping to playing around with some jailbreaking option and cydia and test out whether I can extend the power of the device.

For now, rather take your money and get a Nexus S – yes I know it’s a Samsung, but it promises more than I have found so far on the iPhone.

iPhone 4 – Great if you don’t touch it, sucks if you do!

How stupid is Steve Jobs? I mean really… What’s more interesting is how stupid people are. Apple created a ton of hype around the iPhone 4 with everything from prototype mobiles being found in bars to Jobs iPhone 4 reveal. The phone in theory is great and sure to be a trend setter, but again I have to go back and look objectively at what we have.

The web is a-flame with stories about the iPhone reception problems, which Steve has admitted – exist! Now here is my gripe with Apple, you build a mobile and forget it’s core purpose – to be a mobile phone. What kind of phone gets a reception people when you hold it? What’s Mr Jobs answer – “Well don’t hold it like that”

Nokia has been taking a lot of flack for not keeping up to the smart phone trends, however that being said you can still buy a Nokia today and know that you can make a call and hold it the way you like to hold it, not how Steve Jobs tells you to hold it.

This is a fundamental flaw for me, everyone tells me I’m talking nonsense about Apple, but the truth is seen by their very actions and what their devices can or can’t do.

The iPhone is an accessory it’s useless as a mobile phone! So don’t be stupid and buy a phone that does everything except phone people. Buy a real mobile.

Steve and Apple, why don’t you try to make a phone that works – spend more money and time on the phone and less on your marketing tricks.

The mobile world is going mad

I’m certain that pretty soon the word “mobile” is going to cover more than just mobile phones. The world is going crazy and at this very point you can clearly see signs of it. Apple and Adobe practically kicking and punching each other not forgeting that others are waiting in the sideline to throw their own punch, companies like Google and Microsoft are examples of that.

The guess the question is why? What could be making the world go in this light?

It’s about market share, who owns the enviroment. You can take Google as an example of this – Google is just a search engine, like Yahoo and like yet when people speaking about searching on the internet the expression is “I’ll GOOGLE it” Google has become an action word – a verb! That is the kind of impact that every company is looking for.

Now I’m all about technology and while I can tell you flat out that the microsoft Zune is propally better than the iPod, the truth of the matter is that most people would rather have an iPod that a Zune simply because Apple has marketed their product better and has added the wow factor.

It’s exactly the same for mobile phones, their are a large number of far better phones than the iPhone but again because of Apple’s marketing people believe that the iPhone is a better mobile – the truth can be easily seen if people would just shut up and actually look at the phones.

The new iPhone OS is coming with multitasking – to the world this means crap except if you want to listen to your music and surf the internet at the same time. Apple has a huge event to announce such things yet the Motorola Droid OS has been doing multitasking for the longest time. Not to mention every other mobile I have used – Nokia N97, N96, 6110 – the list could go on forever.

The point is technically the iPhone is a piece of crap and Apple should get their heads out their ass and stop acting like complete fools. Apple want to create a monoply, yet they fail in every regard. Adobe Flash is pretty much going to every mobile out there, yet who says no – Apple. Opera browser was lucky to get their app in the iStore based on a loophole, if the loophole was not their the amazing mobile browser would not have been allowed to compete with the iPhone safari browser.

The point is the madness is the competition every one who is anyone is competing. Apple released the iPad again to me is a piece of crap that serves no purpose, yet days later Google announces it’s working on a tablet of it’s own. Not to mention Tablet PC have been around for a while and I would much rather trust a dell or HP that an Apple.

The competition should continue and is great for the consumer because we will get the best of the best out of it.

iPhone 3Gs – The honest review

18/01/2010 5 comments

Hello and welcome to 2010 – the year we hopefully get more bandwidth in SA. We ended 2010 with me all excited after getting my Nokia N97 32GB, the phone is amazing and has some really cool features that makes it well worth the buy and at half the price of an iPhone 3Gs makes it just that much more exciting.

I decided that I have been pretty harsh on the iPhone and took the bold step to get myself the new 3GS. The first thing that gets you is the cost at double the price of the N97 and even if you’re on contract it is still at least a R5 000 pay in even on a business contract.

Is the cost justified?
I’m not sure, I’ve jailbroken it this morning but the jailbreak is not perfect so everytime I need to restart the phone I have to basically jailbreak it again. Which sucks because you would jailbreak it and then while chilling at home try to mod a few things using cydia.

After you install stuff through cydia you are asked to restarted the phone and off course the phone starts in receovery mode and you pretty much can’t do crap with it.

Trying to get Blackra1n to work was a pain as well. You find the software easy enough on the net but then once installed trying to get cydia, rock and snow to download on your 3g is a real pain. After hours of trying it finally just downloads and the best part I have no idea what I did.

So far it’s been a pain – the guys at the office love it and yes it still have the cool factor but if it cannot function as intended it is a waste to me. So I will put it to the test and see what I can come with.

Will let you know how it turns out and include the softlinks soon.

The Death of the iPhone

20/07/2009 Leave a comment

I have to say, today was a bit of an interesting day. I attended so many meetings, that I did not have time to even hit the gym. Anyway I did have some good news… The death of an iPhone!

That’s right, in my previous blog I wrote about my college who has an iPhone and absolutely loves the bloody thing, sadly my dear friend had some trouble holding onto his R6000 iPhone and droped it into some water – nuff said! The best part is that he had to resort back to his old nokia, good old faithful nokia.

I continue in my belief that the iPhone is crap and that if you want a good quality mobile phone with superb functionality, then you need to go Nokia or HTC.

I will be sure to put up my thoughts on the new HTC Hero – I hear it’s out the park!!! Lets wait and see.
